Howdy Y'all
Hi Everyone!
I don't have much for this installment, but I thought I would provide an update on my Raspberry Pi NAS project as well as some other things I'm working towards.
The NAS is up and running! I ran into an issue where I couldn't see the shared folder I set up, but that turned out to be an error on my part. I had not set up the permissions properly in the samba config, so the folder was not visible. I retraced my steps and was able to find my error. I know this isn't a huge deal to the seasoned devs and sysadmins out there, but for me this was a massive victory. Next step is to buy some more memory and start transferring my media over.
Learning Linux and setting up my homelab environment has been a ton of fun so far. I'm now running Proxmox on an old MacBook Pro with a Home Assistant OS VM to self-host my IoT devices (light bulbs, plugs, etc.) as well as dabbling in other distros (like Arch) via VM. I'm learning new things and having a blast, which is the point! I also set up Tailscale this weekend to access my NAS from other devices when I'm not home. I'm still working out the kinks in that though. Next up, I'm going to replace my streaming box with a Pi Zero running Kodi and set up Pi Hole (or something similar) on another device to block ads and secure the network a bit more.
Two big goals I have down the line are first, to build a new desktop from scratch, and second, to build a cyberdeck. I'm building the desktop for photo editing and light CAD work, and the cyberdeck for pure fun because they seem cool. I'll post progress updates for everything on here.
Until next time!
